Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku have so far shown to be a brilliant attacking pair for Chelsea after both arriving this summer, but speaking in the press conference after Chelsea beat Fulham in the Premier League Summer Series, Mauricio Pochettino admitted that there was a chance that further reinforcements arrived for the attacking third in the final two weeks of the season:
“Today I think we are happy with the performance and they can complement each other really well,” the head coach said in quotes picked up the Evening Standard.
“Yes, of course, maybe we can add some different profiles or different player who can help us, of course we are open. I am so happy with both and we have younger [talent] like Mason [Burstow] today and [Armando] Broja in the UK recovering from his procedure.
“We need to analyse now in the next weeks until the transfer window closes. We will take the best decision for the team.”
As good as they’ve been, neither Nkunku nor Jackson knows the league at all, and it would be a mistake to assume their hot preseason form will continue uninterrupted.
That’s especially true when their backups are Armando Broja – with limited Premier League experience to his name and a bad injury still affecting him – and Mason Burstow, whose only senior football experience of any kind was in League One with Charlton.
No matter what Pochettino says, he can’t really believe that he can yet trust either of those guys as a regular backup this season when he’s seen them both for such a limited period.
