Everton manager Brian Sørensen said that his side enjoyed their 2-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield despite not performing to their absolute best levels.

Katja Snoeijs and Karen Holmgaard got the goals as The Toffees completed an historic league double over The Reds.

When speaking to the media after the match, Everton boss Sørensen expressed his delight with another Merseyside derby victory, this time on the soil of Liverpool.

“We enjoyed coming here,” Sørensen said. “I don’t think we played our best game, probably one of the worst on the ball performances, but defensively, I think we were solid.

“We took the goals at the right moments, so I’m pleased with that. It’s just good to be able to control a game out and know they have maybe a couple [of chances], but I still feel that Courtney [Brosnan] has those nine out of 10 times, so well done by the team.”

The game saw Everton contest the first Merseyside derby since the club’s takeover was completed in December and Sørensen admits that he is excited for the future.

He said “It’s been tough in the last two years. We had no money, we had to sell our best players, had the thinnest squad in the league by a mile and then we had key players going out [injured] it feels like every week, almost. We are here right now [in this good position] and I don’t think anyone would have thought that 10 rounds ago.

“For me, it’s just about trying to get some consistency, trying to build and do some very good signings that would help in squad depth, but also quality because we need that if we want to compete in this league. I’m very excited for the future.”

Only the Barclays Women’s Super League’s top-four have conceded less goals than Everton this season, a statistic that Sørensen is very proud of.

He said “We have a good defensive record, fifth in the league, so we know we can always rely on that if all of the game doesn’t flow. I think we saw that a couple of times, we did play through them, but we want to be better on that side [of the ball].

“It’s been a long season, people are tired and we still have a lot of good players who are not in the squad, so credit to the girls for coming here and getting the win.”

Everton’s final game of the 2024/2025 Barclays Women’s Super League season is against Tottenham Hotspur at Walton Hall Park on Saturday afternoon.
