Nuri Sahin believes that Borussia Dortmund's talented young team must learn how to become winners as quickly as possible following their 3-2 defeat to FC Barcelona.
A spirited performance from Borussia Dortmund wasn't enough as they fell to a 3-2 defeat to FC Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening. There wasn't much to separate the two sides over the course of the 90 minutes, but Barcelona's clinical edge in front of goal ended up making the difference.
While Borussia Dortmund head coach Nuri Sahin was pleased with what he saw on the pitch from his players, he is determined to ensure that they get better at winning these kinds of big matches.
"I don't want to hear that we played a good game. I want us to win these games and we will win these games. We have to learn that as quickly as possible. I have a young team, we have talent, we have quality, but I want winners! We have to become winners," Sahin told DAZN after the game.
Sahin also felt that Borussia Dortmund were punished for their errors by FC Barcelona, who took the lead thrice and became the first away team to win at the Westfalenstadion this season.
"We controlled the game in the second half even though Barca then took the lead twice. I've already said to the lads, 'I don't want to say every time that we played a good game at this level. I want to win these games'. We have to learn to win these games. There's no margin at this level for avoidable mistakes or lack of concentration and we were punished for that."
Despite their loss to Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund are well placed to qualify for the Champions League round of 16. The Black and Yellows have won four and drawn two of their matches so far, and wins over Bologna and Shakhtar Donetsk in their last two matches should be enough to secure a place in the top eight.
