Head coach Dino Toppmöller, Kevin Trapp, and Arthur Theate reflect on the 4-0 defeat at Bayern Munich.
Head coach Dino Toppmöller: “We started well. We were brave, pressed high and quickly had our first good opportunity through Heki. If you want to get something in Munich and tip the scales in your favour, you have to make the most of chances like that. After 15 minutes our opponents took control of the game and were very dominant and tidy in their play. It was an incredibly impressive period for us in which we managed to keep the score at 0-0 for a long time, which made it all the more frustrating to concede the first goal shortly before the break. We had another good chance at the start of the second half, which we failed to take. We’re frustrated with the manner of the second and third goals after we lost the ball. We overstepped the line between courage and naivety too often.”
Kevin Trapp: “We obviously deserved to lose, but not by that margin in the end. We played well in periods, tried a lot of things and were really bold in certain moments, but still ended up losing 4-0. That hurts because it wasn’t all bad, but Bayern have enormous quality and maximised it in ruthless fashion. Overall, we were lacking a bit of decisiveness going forward. We saw what’s still lacking for us to become a really top side, but we’ve come a long way with our young team. The second goal we conceded was my fault.” Arthur Theate: “It wasn’t a good day for us. Our opponents created far more chances, while we gave the ball away cheaply too often – even in dangerous areas. We weren’t consistent enough at both ends of the pitch. We didn’t deserve to get anything today, no excuses. Other teams have done better here, but we mustn’t forget what we’ve achieved so far, so we need to keep our chins up.”
