Despite a rather mixed bag of results in the Championship so far this season, West Brom are currently third in the table below league leaders Bournemouth and Fulham in second.
One player who has certainly played a significant part in the Baggies’ current campaign and has arguably been their unsung hero is Darnell Furlong.

Having played in all but one of West Brom’s league games so far this season, featuring as a right-back and in right midfield, he has shown how reliable he has been for Baggies boss Valerien Ismael.
The 26-year-old, who is currently valued at £4.5m according to Transfermarkt, has also provided three assists in the league this season, the first of which came in their 4-0 win over Sheffield United, with the other two coming in their 3-0 win over Bristol City.
Furlong has also averaged 1.4 shots at goal and 1.6 key passes per game in the league, highlighting his attacking prowess for the Baggies, which isn’t really a surprise given how the player was praised for his “dangerous” crosses by Glenn Murray last season.
From a defensive point of view, Furlong has also proven himself a solid unit for the Midlands club, averaging 1.4 tackles, 1.8 clearances and 1.1 interceptions per game and winning 61% of his duels, according to SofaScore.

Also, his average of getting dribbled past stands at 0.8 per game, which is lower than fellow Baggies defender Dara O’Shea (1.2), even though Furlong has played more games than the Irishman this season.
Taking all this into account, it’s easy to see why Ismael has started Furlong so regularly this season given how well-rounded a player he has been for the team and cementing himself as a real unsung hero.
Moving forward, if Furlong can continue playing regularly for the Baggies and keep being a useful attacking and defensive outlet for the team, he could well inspire them to a promotion place by the end of the campaign.
