West Ham United have confirmed the £40 million signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Max Kilman.

The 27-year-old signed a seven-year contract with the Hammers, keeping him at the London Stadium until the summer of 2031.

Kilman will renew acquaintances with West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui, who made him captain during his time as head coach at the Molineux Stadium.

West Ham saw two initial bids turned down for the highly experienced centre-back before both clubs agreed on a £40m transfer.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be a West Ham United player,” said Kilman.

“As soon as I was aware of the interest from the Club, it was an opportunity I was keen to pursue, so I couldn’t be more delighted to be here.

“I really enjoyed working with Julen during his time at Wolves – he’s a top-class coach and someone I learned a lot from, and I am confident I will continue to improve as a player under his management here.

“West Ham is a massive Club, and I feel this is the natural next step forward in my career.”

Addressing a key area of concern

Lopetegui would be delighted to add Kilman to the squad. The Englishman was his captain at Wolves and will be the natural leader we’re desperately lacking at the London Stadium.

After conceding 74 Premier League goals last season, a defensive revamp was undoubtedly a key area of concern for Lopetegui when he succeeded David Moyes.

The Hammers boss has certainly addressed that concern by signing Kilman, who is considered one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

Kilman kept five clean sheets last season and proved he can be effective at the top end of the pitch by scoring two goals and creating four big chances.

He also won 55% of his ground duels and was nearly unbeatable in the air, winning 71% of his aerial contests. He’s a superb signing and will be worth every penny for the Hammers.
