West Ham United are considering making a move for Genoa defender Koni De Winter in the summer transfer window.
According to the Sunday Mirror (printed edition, page 70), the Hammers are looking to bolster their defence, and they have earmarked the “Belgium star” as one of their targets.
The 22-year-old is a “versatile” defender who can play as a centre-back, full-back, or defensive midfielder.
Italian giants Inter Milan and AC Milan are keen to sign the former Juventus man. He has been impressive under Patrick Vieira at Genoa, and Juventus have a 20 per cent sell on clause for the defender.
Graham Potter will be looking to stamp his authority in the summer window, and adding new players in defence could be his priority. There were eight new arrivals last summer, and Potter may have to sell a few players before he can buy.
The report claims that Konstantinos Mavropanos could leave the club, while Vladimir Coufal and Aaron Cresswell are likely to move on as their contracts approach the end.
Winter can play in multiple positions. He has made 15 starts in Serie A this season and one more appearance from the bench. He has scored three goals in the league.
It has been another disappointing campaign for the Hammers. Last season, they finished ninth in the table and conceded 74 goals. This season, they have conceded 47 goals thus far and find themselves 16th in the Premier League.
The results have improved under Potter, but there’s still a lot of work left to be done. De Winter could be a smart signing for the Hammers, but persuading him to move to the London Stadium could be tricky, especially if the two Milan clubs join the race.
