West Ham United are reportedly in the running to sign Nigerian-born centre-back Jordan Torunarigha from Belgian club KAA Gent, according to TuttMercatoWeb.
The 26-year-old has emerged as a target for the Hammers as they look to bolster their backline for the upcoming season.
Torunarigha impressed during the 2023/24 campaign, featuring in 44 games for Gent across all competitions.
The Nigerian international helped the Jupiler Pro League side keep five clean sheets in 34 league games, winning 57% of his duels. He recorded 2.46 tackles and 1.77 interceptions per 90.
Torunarigha is excellent on the ball, registering five progressive passes and 1.05 progressive carries per game.
His consistent performances, physical profile, ball-playing ability and experience have caught the eye of several clubs, including West Ham, Crystal Palace and Leeds United.
Torunarigha’s contract with Gent expires next year, making him an attractive proposition for clubs looking for a cost-effective signing to reinforce their defence.
Initial reports suggested a valuation of around €5 million, but Gent might be more flexible due to the player entering the final year of his contract.
Serie A club Monza reportedly offered €3-3.5 million for Torunarigha, but their bid was rejected.
West Ham are looking to play a more expansive brand of football under new manager Julen Lopetegui, and Torunarigha could be a perfect fit.
With time running out before the transfer window closes, the Hammers will need to act swiftly to secure the services of the highly sought-after defender.
