West Ham United are on the verge of cutting ties with Technical Director Tim Steidten, according to a bombshell report from The Athletic.
Steidten’s 18-month tenure at the London Stadium has been marked by a mixed bag of transfer dealings and clashes with management.
Appointed in July 2023, Steidten oversaw a summer transfer window in which Declan Rice left for big money. The funds from Rice’s sale were used to acquire stars like Mohammed Kudus, Edson Alvarez, and James Ward-Prowse with mixed results.
Last summer, things went south as West Ham splurged on the crocky Niclas Fullkrug and the inconspicuous Luis Guilherme. Both struggled to make any impact at the club.
Despite Steidten’s summer outlay, the Irons still find themselves floundering in 14th place in the Premier League this season.
The decision to hire coach Julen Lopetegui this summer also drew the ire of fans. Speaking of managers, Steidten had run-ins with both the Spaniard and former West Ham boss David Moyes. Lopetegui even banned Steidten from the club’s training ground.
With the arrival of new boss Graham Potter, there was a glimmer of hope that Steidten could be integrated into the fold. However, the club has decided to move in a different direction.
Steidten’s departure is likely to be confirmed in the coming days. Potter has already brought in Kyle Macaulay from Chelsea to bolster his recruitment team, reuniting with a trusted colleague from his time at Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Hammers will hope the club can hire a top-class operator capable of building a cohesive squad that can challenge for the Europa League and Conference League slots on the Premier League table.
West Ham do not need to splurge cash. They must be tactful in their dealings to avoid mistakes like signing an oft-injured 31-year-old to lead the line and throwing another £57 million for Jhon Duran when it does not work.
