In a recent report, French news outlet Homme du Match stated that West Ham United are eyeing a move for Sao Paulo midfielder Igor Gomes this summer. It is understood that the Hammers are showing interest in signing the Brazilian playmaker, who could be available for around Є15m during this summer transfer window (via Homme du Match).
The South American sensation has been dubbed as the ‘new Kaka’ back in his home country after he managed to establish himself as a chief playmaker in Sao Paulo’s attack. Gomes has made a total of 114 appearances for the Brazilian giants thus far, scoring eight goals and providing nine assists in the process across multiple competitions.
The 22-year-old caught the eye at times at Sao Paulo in the previous campaign when he averaged 0.6 key passes, 0.7 crosses, 0.6 dribbles and 1.1 aerial duels per game in the Brasileirao. He even distributed the ball well as he completed 75.9% of his attempted passes in the Brazilian first division (stats via whoscored).
Gomes is still quite raw and would need time to hone his skills and become a top talent at the highest level someday. He has impressed in patches at the Cícero Pompeu de Toledo Stadium but still has a long way to go before he can feature in top-flight football week in week out.

Gomes can be a decent playmaker in the opposition half when he is playing well on the field. He can even use his quickness to make some clever runs with the ball towards the opposition penalty area. The Brazilian youngster has a wide range of passes in his locker and can cut open the opponent’s defence with a killer pass in the final third. However, he needs to learn a way to be more decisive in front of the opponent’s goal if he intends to be more productive in the coming seasons.
There is no doubt that Gomes will enhance the overall depth of David Moyes’ squad if the Hammers manage to lure him to the English capital before the start of the new campaign. At 22, the Brazilian talent has the potential to become a future star at the London Stadium.
Gomes will add some healthy competition for Pablo Fornals, Said Benrahma and Manuel Lanzini for a regular starting place in Moyes’ first team. He could even grow into one of the best players in his position someday if Moyes can unlock the best out of him over the next few years. With all things considered, the East London outfit should think about snapping Gomes up during this summer transfer window as he will be a decent option for them in the long run.
