So unimpressed has Ruben Amorim been with the attacking options at his disposal that he opted to start Kobbie Mainoo up front in Manchester United’s last Premier League game against Crystal Palace.
The move did not pan out the way the head coach would have liked but by placing both Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee on the bench, Amorim sent a strong message to INEOS about what he felt about the strikers brought in by the club.
The Dane, in particular, has been a massive letdown in his sophomore campaign, managing only seven goals in 30 appearances this season with only two of them coming in the Premier League.
The 22-year-old is without a goal in 13 games now and has looked lost up front on his own in most games, struggling to do even the basics right.
He has failed to hold on to the ball under pressure while his first touch keeps letting him down. After finishing as the top scorer in his debut season when pundits termed him “stunning“, expectations were sky-high but he seems to have regressed.
And Amorim is far from impressed and has effectively put him on trial till the end of the season and should he fail to rediscover his touch, United are open to letting him go.
Teamtalk have now revealed that West Ham United are keen on the Denmark international and could pounce for him in the summer should their gamble with Evan Ferguson not pay off.
United had paid an initial £64 million to secure the services of Hojlund from Atalanta but given his poor current form, INEOS are well aware that no club will come close to matching that figure.
As per the Teamtalk report, the Danish hitman “has admirers at West Ham ” including Graham Potter and United could be willing to let him go should the Hammers submit a £40 million bid.
“West Ham have identified Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund as a potential target for the summer should they not make Evan Ferguson’s loan from Brighton permanent, TEAMtalk understands.
“The 22-year-old has failed to live up to expectations since his £72m (including add-ons) move from Atalanta in the summer of 2023. He certainly has potential, but has struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League.
“As a result, Man Utd ARE considering parting ways with Hojlund in the summer, with Ruben Amorim not convinced by the forward. The Red Devils have already accepted that they won’t be able to recoup what they paid as things stand.
“Sources state that a £40m bid could be enough to sign the Danish international if he doesn’t turn his form around this season.”
As previously relayed by The Peoples Person, there is also interest in Hojlund from Italy and it will be intriguing to see where his future lies once the season ends.
With Amorim’s attack looking threadbare due to lack of any January additions, Hojlund must start performing immediately or his United career might be over after only two seasons.
