Cardiff City had been hoping to push for promotion in what is Mick McCarthy’s first full season in charge of the club but they have endured a very tough start.

Whilst the experienced boss wasn’t backed with major funds to reshape the squad, he did do business, with one outgoing seeing Robert Glatzel leave for Hamburg.

The 27-year-old was a big-money addition for the Bluebirds when he arrived from Heidenheim in 2019, when it was hoped the forward could fire the Welsh side back to the Premier League.

Some fans will fairly point out that Cardiff didn’t play to Glatzel’s strengths, but ten league goals in over 50 appearances in the subsequent two season shows that it didn’t really work for the player in the Championship.

Therefore, a summer switch to Hamburg wasn’t a surprise.

It gave Glatzel a chance to return to a league he knows well and he has joined a big club that will want to be in the Bundesliga next season.

Unfortunately for HSV, things, once again, haven’t gone to plan in their promotion push at this early stage, as they sit 7th in the table, although they’re only five points off top.

But, for Glatzel, the move has certainly worked. Five goals in nine games is an excellent return, and he has quickly established himself as a crucial part of the team as their focal point.

Of course, the challenge for the player is to maintain this form but the early signs suggest he will be a major asset for his new club.

With McCarthy’s side struggling for goals and points, it may frustrate some that more wasn’t done to try and get the best out of Glatzel, who is showing for Hamburg that he is a talented forward.
