Inter set themselves up with a valuable 2-1 advantage over Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-final heading into next week’s return leg in San Siro, and while the Nerazzurri won of their own merit, the press in Italy and Germany feel that Harry Kane’s first-half miss was the ‘turning point’.

A fantastic improvised finish from Lataro Martinez gave Simone Inzaghi’s side a first-half lead at the Allianz Arena in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday night. Second-half substitute Thomas Mϋller found a late equaliser, which was beaten by Davide Frattesi’s 88th minute winner.

Though Inter are on their way back to Italy with three points and an important advantage ahead of the second leg, it wasn’t always straightforward against the Bavarian giants.

The Nerazzurri were put under plenty of pressure in the opening exchanges, and hat the biggest let-off of the game when England captain Kane struck the post from 12 yards out.

“It doesn’t happen very often, but it’s the life of a striker. Sometimes it does. One of those. I’ve started too far out, and it came out of the post,” Kane said of his first-half miss after full-time, reported via Sky Sport Italia.

“There were a couple of half chances in the second half as well. You have to take the highs and the lows. The good thing is I’m getting chances and I think it’s a positive feeling.”

Outlets in Italy feel that Kane’s miss was the ‘turning point’ in the game, and that he and Bayern struggled to capitalise on their chances from that point onwards.

“The post in the 26th minute was the turning point, he stopped being dangerous and always missed from there,” Corriere della Sera wrote in Tuesday’s player ratings.

La Gazzetta dello Sport also lamented Kane’s miss, and gave him a rating of 5.5 out of 10 for his performance. Most outlets in Italy gave the Englishman a rating between 5-6/10.

Calciomercato.com labelled Kane Bayern’s ‘first defender’, but wrote that the goal seemed to be ‘cursed’ for him on the night.

Meanwhile, in Germany, the Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote that it was ‘hard to believe what happened in the 26th minute’. They added that Kane ‘struggled almost desperately to correct his mishap’ for the remainder of the game.
