It’s March. We’ve won the Steel City Derby. We’ve got an intense eight-game run-in to come. But let’s take a breath. It’s the international break and the rumour mill has fired up again.
The latest from Alan Nixon suggests the Blades are interested in Sampson Dweh from Viktoria Plzen. The Liberian defender, 23, has starred in the Europa League this season and could be on his way to Bramall Lane. If United reach the Premier League.
With the recent foray into AI and less-than-traditional Wilder signings. Anything is possible. So, who is Sampson Dweh?
Dweh began his career with LPRC Oilers. Also known as the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company Oilers Sport Association.
He played five games for the club between July 2021 and September 2022.
Dweh left Liberia to head to the Czech second division to play for MFK Vyskov. He played 14 games and scored once before being sent on loan to Viktoria Plzen at the start of the 2023-2024 season.
Dweh’s initial loan at Plzen saw him make 48 appearances scoring twice and getting four assists.
He made 15 Europa Conference League appearances as Plzen made it to the quarter-finals. With them eventually losing two-nil in the second leg.
Dweh also made 30 appearances in the Czech Liga as Plzen finished a comfortable third place. But 15 points away from second.
This season, Dweh has made 42 appearances for Plzen in all competitions.
He has made 25 appearances in the league scoring four goals so far. With his side fourth in the league comfortably in the Championship playoff but 13 points off the top of the league.
Dweh has also made 15 total appearances in the Europa League with Viktoria Plzen knocked out in the Round of 16 to Lazio.
Dweh has brilliant defensive stats in Europe this season. He has won 24 tackles leading to a tackles won percentage of 75%. As well as winning 36 aerial duels again accounting for a success rate of 75%.
His most impressive stat is his duels won (78) placing him in the 100th percentile for Europa League centre-backs. A stat that could make him a favourite for a Bramall Lane and our love of battlers.
Additionally, he has completed 18 interceptions, four blocks and 61 recoveries placing him in the 95th percentile and above for all three stats.
In the Europa League, Dweh has the most accurate long balls with 48 of any centre-back in the competition placing him in the 100th percentile of the stat. He has also create three chances and two successful crosses.
His 80.2% pass accuracy whilst strong is arguably where he could improve compared to other defenders in Europe’s second competition.
This season in the Europa League, Dweh has made 13 touches in the opposition box and when on the ball he has been fouled ten times.
Samson Dweh is 5 foot 11, a stat that makes his aerial duels won percentage in the Europa League even more impressive.
Since making his debut for Liberia in 2021, Dweh has made 24 appearances and scoring once for his country.
Sampson Dweh is another fairly unknown commodity for many of us of the Sheffield United persuasion. Although, he has proven when placed into the Europa League and the Europa Conference League that he can step up to face elite competition.
At the age of 23, he would likely be competing for a first-team place with Sheffield United next season. But also has room to grow into a better defender if he made the step up to the Premier League.
The quality and potential he has, has also led to interest from Leicester City and Wolves according to Football Insider. So, one way or another he may be playing in England next season. So perhaps, it is worth the Blades pushing to the front of the queue and signing him before his value rises as more clubs become aware of his talent.
