FC Lorient and Athletic Club have announced that this weekend they will wear a shared captain’s armband for their respective matches against Stade Lavallois (on Saturday) and Real Valladolid (on Sunday), as part of a joint effort to promote Breton and Basque culture and language.
The Breton side state, “[This] collaboration allows the two clubs, which carefully maintain their culture and in particular their regional language (Breton and Euskara), to proudly combine their identities… [We] come together around a very strong attachment to our territory, common values but also an openness to the outside world materialized in particular by our ports connected to the world.“
This season Lorient have created a unique captain’s armband for each home game with the designs highlighting a different aspect of the history of the club and the local region. This weekend the armband is designed around the Basque and Breton flags and will feature both clubs’ badges. The letter K is front and centre of the new armband representing the Breton and Basque word for captain (Kabitenn and Kapitaina).
Lorient are looking to bounce immediately back from their relegation down to Ligue 2 last season. The club are five points clear at the top of the table and have won their last five games in a row as they search for automatic promotion back to Ligue 1.
