Pundit Don Goodman believes Doncaster Rovers should offer striker Billy Sharp a new contract this summer following their promotion from League Two.

After a stunning late surge into the play-offs, Doncaster suffered heartbreak as they were beaten by Crewe Alexandra in the semi-finals last season, but Grant McCann's side faced no such problems this time around.

Following another strong finish to the season, Rovers secured automatic promotion with a 2-1 win over Bradford City at the Eco-Power Stadium last weekend, meaning they will return to League One next term following a three-year absence.

While Doncaster will still be celebrating their achievement, McCann will soon need to make some big decisions on his squad, particularly with a number of senior players out of contract this summer, and perhaps his most difficult call will be whether to retain Sharp.

Almost 10 years after leaving the club, Sharp made an emotional return to Doncaster in the summer, and while the 39-year-old was not a regular starter this season, he still made plenty of important contributions, most notably scoring the second goal against Bradford in the game that sealed promotion for the South Yorkshire outfit.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Goodman said that Doncaster should extend Sharp's contract this summer, and he pointed to the example of Wrexham, who achieved promotion from League One this season despite having one of the oldest squads in the division.

"It's a good question about Billy Sharp," Goodman said.

"Obviously Doncaster's end to the season is what has propelled them to automatic promotion, Billy has mostly come off the bench in that run.

"But he's still started 19 games and got nine goals and an assist, and I think more than anything else, his influence on the dressing room and the younger players has been absolutely massive.

"When you think that this is a player who has operated at a much higher level for nearly all of his career, could he go again in League One?

"You have to say that, when you look at the old guard Wrexham assembled and how well they have done, then why not?"

Billy Sharp's Doncaster Rovers journey may not be over yet

Sharp returned to Doncaster with the goal of helping them win promotion to League One, and even though he has not featured as often as he would have liked, he has certainly played a big role in his side achieving that objective.

The striker may now be 39, but he confirmed that he has no plans to retire just yet, and after revealing that McCann is keen for him to remain at the Eco-Power Stadium, it seems likely that a contract offer will be coming his way in the next few weeks.

Having a player of Sharp's experience in the dressing room will be beneficial for Rovers as they navigate their first season back in the third tier, and given that he has been prolific at every level he has played at during his career, it would be no surprise to see him continue to chip in with goals for McCann's men.
