Former Wigan Athletic man Jack Hendry played for Scotland as they were thrashed by Germany

Scotland's Euro 2024 campaign began with a disastrous result on Friday night, as Steve Clarke's men were hammered 5-1 by tournament hosts Germany.

The Tartan Army found themselves 3-0 down at half-time, while Watford defender Ryan Porteous also received a red card for a bad challenge on Ilkay Gundogan.

Second half substitute Niclas Fullkrug scored the hosts' fourth goal of the evening, before Antonio Rudiger's own goal looked to have given the Scots some consolation.

However, a 95th minute strike past a sorry Angus Gunn from Emre Can saw Julian Nagelsmann's side rub salt in the wounds of their opponents.

Wigan Athletic supporters, meanwhile, will have been looking at this game through a slightly different lens due to the participation of former Latics defender Jack Hendry.

Latics fans will have mixed feelings after Scotland's defensive display

Former Latics defender Hendry was a part of a woeful Scotland defence on Friday night, who appeared vastly unorganised while the likes of Jamal Musiala simply waltzed past them.

Hendry offered very little to prevent his nation from suffering an onslaught at the hands of Germany, and according to FotMob, he had the least touches of any outfield player who played the full 90 minutes.

This poor performance from Hendry, who currently plies his trade in Saudi Arabia for Al-Ettifaq, on Friday night may make Latics supporters glad that they let the central defender go back in 2016.

After all, the centre-half was not exactly a first team player during his stay in Greater Manchester and, in fact, he only ever made three appearances for the 'Tics after signing from Partick Thistle in 2015, which all came in the EFL Trophy.

Furthermore, Hendry did not gain many first team minutes during his loan spells away from the Latics, making just six appearances for Shrewsbury Town during 2015/16.

He was subsequently loaned to MK Dons for the 2016/17 campaign, but only made 12 appearances for the Buckinghamshire side before moving permanently to Scottish outfit Dundee in the summer of 2017.

However, after moving back north of the border, Hendry showed his class, and earned a move to Celtic by February 2018, where he was successful.

During his time with the Glasgow giants, the defender won two Scottish FA Cup titles, two Premierships and two League Cups, while he also endured a loan move to Melbourne City before he permanently went on to join Belgian side Oostende in 2021.

It was also during his Celtic tenure that Hendry made his Scotland debut in 2018, and he has been a regular feature ever since, making 32 caps.

Latics fans will have mixed feelings after seeing Hendry's performance on Friday, given the fact that he has gone on to have a successful career which has earned him a spot in a major tournament, but was also a part of a woeful Scottish defence against Germany.

Hendry's absence was not felt during Latics' 2015/16 season

It was in March 2016 that the Latics first let go of Hendry, allowing him to join Shrewsbury on loan, but while he has gone on to win trophies in both Scotland and in Beligium with former team Club Brugge, the Greater Manchester outfit did not feel his absence that year.

In fact, Gary Caldwell's Wigan team went on to win the 2015/16 League One title as Hendry found a first team sport hard to come by courtesy of the presence of Donervon Daniels, Craig Morgan and former Leeds United man Jason Pearce.
