The Royals' business could be limited during this window, but two deals, one in and one out, could benefit them.
Many Reading supporters are extremely worried about the prospect of another firesale during this January transfer window.
The Royals, without a takeover, are still facing cash flow challenges, and the club needs to ensure it can make it through the rest of the season without falling into administration.
Player sales could potentially allow them to raise enough cash, but ideally, an external funder (i.e. a prospective owner) would come in and inject the funds needed.
Whether that happens remains to be seen - and it looks set to be a long wait for the Berkshire outfit's fans in their quest to find out how this transfer window is going to shape up.
They can't really afford to lose too many players during this window like they did last January - because they have less depth now.
The Royals could, however, afford to offload some players in one particular area. And they will also be keen to make some additions, though it remains to be seen whether they will be able to do that.
Below, we take a look at one signing they would ideally want to make, and one player they will probably be keen to offload.
Chem Campbell was a real asset for the Royals during the first half of the 2024/25 campaign, having joined on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
But with the Berkshire side under transfer restrictions, something that comes as no surprise considering their financial situation, they were only able to bring him in until January.
So far, the club has been unable to get a deal over the line to sign Campbell for the remainder of the season, but they are certainly trying to tie him down to another loan deal for the rest of 2024/25.
Considering how good he has been for much of his stay in Berkshire, it's no surprise that Noel Hunt's side are keen to retain him.
He started off slow, but has contributed a decent number of goals and assists and has looked a lot better on the ball as his loan has progressed.
It would be ideal for all parties if he signed another loan deal, but whether the Royals will be allowed to retain him remains to be seen.
Dean Bouzanis was only on loan at Stevenage until this month, so the Royals will have to figure out a solution for the Australian for the remaining months of his contract.
Jokull Andresson may have left the club, but the Berkshire side could probably afford to lose another goalkeeping option, and it would be difficult to see Bouzanis staying put beyond the end of this window.
His lack of game time under Alex Revell could ruin his chances of moving on, but his agent will surely be working hard to get him another move.
The experienced shot-stopper hasn't been afraid to go out on loan in the past - and it wouldn't be a surprise if another temporary move is on the horizon.
With Joel Pereira and David Button available as first-team options for Hunt, Bouzanis is probably surplus to requirements, and a move away from the Select Car Leasing Stadium would probably be ideal for all parties.
