Wolverhampton Wanderers are “still working” on making new signings at Molineux ahead of the winter window’s closure next week, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.
Wolves have already made four additions to Julen Lopetegui’s side this month, with the potential for more arrivals due before next week’s deadline.
It’s been a busy January at Molineux so far, with Wolves bolstering their squad across a variety of areas of the pitch.
The West Midlands outfit wrapped up the signing of Atlético Madrid striker Matheus Cunha in December on an initial loan deal with the obligation to buy for a club-record fee of £43m.
The club have also welcomed the additions of OGC Nice midfielder Mario Lemina and Paris Saint-Germain forward Pablo Sarabia before West Ham United’s Craig Dawson was snapped up for £3.3m last weekend.
TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook told GiveMeSport earlier this month that Wolves could sign up to “half a dozen” players during the transfer window, but Jones has now said that the need for new faces “isn’t felt quite as much” with Lopetegui’s side now out of the relegation zone, albeit on goal difference.
When talking about Wolves’ potential transfer business, Jones told GiveMeSport: “That need for new faces isn’t felt quite as much as it was a couple of months ago when we were talking about how six players would definitely be needed to come in in January.
“They’re still working, no doubt about it, on bringing in players that could improve that XI, but I don’t think it’s as much of a panic as it once was.”
It had looked as if Wolves were set to secure the signing of Flamengo midfielder João Gomes for a fee of £15m, before Ligue 1 outfit Lyon hijacked the deal by offering £2.5m more than the Premier League side.
And journalist Venê Casagrande has now reported that the Brazilian giants have informed Lyon that they will no longer be selling the 21-year-old to the Wanderers in what will come as a blow to Lopetegui’s chances of bolstering his midfield options.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror (via Talking Wolves) has stated that Wolves are interested in bringing Brighton & Hove Albion right-back Tariq Lamptey to the club on a season-long loan deal, meaning that one of Nélson Semedo or Jonny Castro Otto could be looking over their shoulders in the coming days.
Therefore, it is set to be an intriguing end to the transfer window at Molineux but there may not be an influx of signings that were initially intended at the beginning of the month.
