Bristol City goalkeeper Daniel Bentley is reportedly a target for Premier League side Wolves.

According to Bristol Live, Wolves have expressed an interest in signing Bentley and could make a move if current number two Matija Sarkic leaves Molineux this month.

Bentley has lost his place at Ashton Gate to Max O’Leary in recent months after initially starting the season as first choice. He has not featured for the Robins since early October and could be allowed to leave the club this month.

Wolves are not the only club keeping tabs on Bentley, with Stoke City also reportedly making an enquiry for the 29-year-old, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

But Wolves could now be set to offer Bentley a top flight opportunity, with the Express and Star claiming that Julen Lopetegui is willing to let Sarkic depart, wanting a more experienced back-up to Jose Sa.

Robins manager Nigel Pearson was non-committal on Bentley’s future when asked last week, but did not rule out a potential exit for the club captain.

“There has been speculation about Dan’s position. How do we sit with that? We have two very good keepers at the football club,” Pearson told Bristol Live.

“Max is playing well at the moment and we’ll see how things develop. I’m not ruling anything in or out. Dan’s contract is up at the end of the season, we’ll see if anything develops.

“We can never leave ourselves short, we always need to have the right cover. For argument’s sake if something happens with Dan in the last week-and-a-half, we’d need somebody else to come in, we’re never gonna leave ourselves short.

“It’s important to have conversations with players about where they sit. Their agents can talk to the club, they can do whatever they want. I’ll talk to the players.”

True False

The verdict

Bentley should be cautious about making the move to Wolves.

While the prospect of Premier League football may be appealing, he is unlikely to get many minutes with Sa the undisputed number one at the club.

It seems a little pointless for Bentley to swap sitting on the bench at City to do the same elsewhere, so he should instead focus on securing a move where can be provided with the necessary guarantees of game time.

But Pearson will also be reluctant to let him go unless he can find a replacement, particularly after Stefan Bajic’s departure left him short on depth between the sticks.
