The final of the Westfalenpokal will be the third time this season that the Borussia women have faced their Gelsenkirchen counterparts, following their two previous meetings in the Westfalenliga. The first match ended in a goalless draw, while the BVB women ran out 2-1 victors in the return fixture in front of a sell-out crowd at Stadion Rote Erde and took an important step towards the title and promotion to the Regionalliga in the process.
It is the first time in their short history that the Borussia Dortmund women have reached the final of the Westfalenpokal. They claimed a convincing 3-0 triumph away to Regionalliga outfit Arminia Bielefeld in the semi-final. The team had also previously beaten their league rivals Germania Hauenhorst and Fortuna Freudenberg, as well as SV Herbern, on their journey to this year's final.
FC Schalke 04 set up a semi-final meeting with SSV Rhade thanks to victories against SV Union Wessum, 1. FFC Recklinghausen and Arminia Ibbenbüren. Following a goalless 90 minutes, Schalke triumphed 6-5 on penalties against their higher-ranked Regionalliga opponents to secure their place in the final.
There is now great excitement for the third meeting between BVB and S04 at Stadion Rote Erde in the Westfalenpokal final on 1 June. The winner will qualify for the first round of the DFB-Pokal next season.
Information on tickets and sales will follow in due course.
