Iran’s loss to the United States means that they have failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup. While the knockout is certainly disappointing, the nation and the citizens have already made a mark on many’s hearts in the tournament.
Biggest disappointment: Iran had an average age of over 29, which doesn’t always fare well and as a result, they could never really stick to an attractive approach to game. But despite that, they had some crucial moments that threatened the likes of England, Wales and the USA. While they did take a beating against the English, they still managed to create chances that led to them scoring twice.
Best player: Mehdi Taremi was expected to be Iran’s vital performer and he did live up to the billing, as he scored twice. While his overall performance could have been better, Ramin Rezaeian was impressive at the back too. While being a regular at right-back, he scored once and was vital in helping the side with adding attacking impetus from that side.
But Carlos Queiroz’s side knew that it will be a tough challenge and they did make a mark. The key for Iran will now be that they tide over a transition over the next few years, as their older players move away.
Grade: D – A frustrating exit and wasn’t the most visually appealing, in terms of on-pitch performances.
