For a country that was seen as a dark horse for the tournament, being knocked out in the group stages of the FIFA World Cup is a massive disappointment for Serbia.
Despite having a squad full of well known names, Serbia failed to pick up even a single win and could never show enough spark in their three games. They did score five goals, but the cohesion from back to front was sorely lacking and the side also dealt with injuries from the very start of the tournament.
A case can be made of the fact that manager Dragan Stojković often had too many players to choose from in the forward areas, but losing to Brazil ended up being a key point of their tournament.
Most impressive player: Dusan Tadic grabbed two assists in the tournament and he was arguably the glue for the midfield and attack, as he joined them together with his passing and creativity. Without him, Serbia would have looked much more clunky than they actually were.
Biggest disappointment: The reason why many saw Serbia as the ‘dark horses’ was due to the quality of their players but sadly enough, a lot of them could never live up to the billing. Filip Kostic played only two games and failed to impress and while Sergej Milinkovic-Savic did score once, he could never create much either. Nikola Milenkovic too had an unimpressive campaign.
Grade: E – A tournament to forget, but they can yet come back stronger at Euro 2024.
