Birmingham City's 2024 summer transfer window will go down in history thanks to their spending and the calibre of players they've brought in, the like of which will never be seen in League One again.

Blues' ambitious owners have smashed the League One transfer record on a number of occasions this summer, putting the icing on the cake in the latter stages of the window when they signed Jay Stansfield for a reported fee of £15million plus £5million in add-ons, an absurd fee for the third tier.

It's fair to say that St Andrew's is a good place to be at the moment, and given the quality that Chris Davies has at his disposal, anything less than promotion would be a huge failure.

Despite some of the big money they've spent, Alfie May, who was brought to the club for a fee of £775,000 from Charlton Athletic, has been dubbed the club's best bit of business, with the striker scoring four goals from four games in League One.

Alfie May signing deemed Birmingham City's best of business

Our Birmingham City fan pundit, Mike Gibbs, believes that despite some of the big money the club have spent, the £775,000 they paid for May has proved to be an excellent business, and has been really impressed by what he's seen from the striker so far.

Speaking to Football League World, Mike said: “I think the best bit of business for me is probably Alfie May.

“I think you look at what we spent on him, roughly three quarters of a million, and you look at his return already, he’s scored in every league game, and I was at the game on Saturday, and he didn’t play a major part, but had one clear-cut chance and took it.

“For me, a goalscorer at this level is worth his weight in gold, so the fact that we’ve got one for £775k I think is a bit of a bargain.

“He’s 31, but watching him play on Saturday, he looks like a 26-year-old rather than a 31-year-old, so he’s got the game and the legs to play at that level and higher for a while.”

Alfie May has proved an excellent addition so far

May was the League One top scorer last season, scoring 23 goals, and he tops the charts already this season with four goals in four games.

Despite being on the wrong side of 30, May seems to be getting better with age after working his way up through non-league before joining Doncaster Rovers in 2017, and the fact that Blues have a proven goalscorer for such a bargain fee bodes well for them.

It feels like Birmingham are yet to fully click but have still won three games and drawn one from their first four games, so when they click it looks as if they could potentially run away with the league, and May will undoubtedly score plenty of goals.

While the club have made statement signings with the likes of Stansfield, signing May was a shrewder one as they knew he'd score goals at this level and wouldn't break the bank, and that's proved to be the case so far.

May's addition looks to be an excellent piece of business, and Blues supporters will be hoping he continues his impressive goalscoring form in the coming weeks as things start to take shape under Davies.
