Parkinson was appointed as Wrexham manager in July 2021, and after suffering a National League play-off semi-final to Grimsby Town in his first season in charge, he guided the club to promotion to League Two in the 2022-23 campaign as they won the title with an incredible 111 points.

The Red Dragons seamlessly made the step up to the fourth tier and they completed back-to-back promotions as they finished in second place behind champions Stockport County last season.

Backed by owners Rob Reynolds and Ryan McElhenney, Wrexham brought in nine new players this summer, with Arthur Okonkwo, Callum Burton, Lewis Brunt, Dan Scarr, Sebastian Revan, George Dobson, Ollie Rathbone, Josh Adam and Modou Faal arriving at the STok Cae Ras.

Parkinson's men have enjoyed an outstanding start to life back in League One and while they suffered their first defeat of the season as they were beaten 3-1 at Birmingham City on Monday night, they remain top of the table.

Lee Trundle issues Phil Parkinson verdict

Parkinson has not been without his detractors, with some suggesting in the past that Wrexham would need to find a manager that better matched their lofty ambitions.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Trundle, who scored 19 goals in 58 games for Wrexham between 2001 and 2003, backed the Red Dragons boss and delivered a message to his doubters.

"He is most definitely proving doubters wrong," Trundle said.

"Some were unsure of him in National League and look at what a top job he has done to ensure that promotion and then follow up with League to success and now a positive start to League One.

"I do think there isn’t such a big difference between League Two and League One but you still need to go out and get the results.

"But full credit to Phil and his coaching team.

"The players are doing it on the pitch, they are understanding the instructions and style of play and as I said, they believe they can win every game, they don’t give up and keep fighting."

Phil Parkinson deserves more credit for Wrexham success

It is difficult to disagree with Trundle that Parkinson has done an excellent job at Wrexham.

With much of the attention focused on the club's high-profile owners, it is easy to overlook Parkinson, but the success the club have experienced over the last few years would not have been possible without the 56-year-old.

The Red Dragons had spent years languishing in the National League before Parkinson's arrival, and while he has been backed by Reynolds and McElhenney in the transfer market, he has transformed them into a team that look capable of challenging for promotion to the Championship.

Parkinson will have been disappointed by the defeat at Birmingham on Monday night, but it does not detract from what has been an impressive start to the campaign in League One, and he will be confident that his side can bounce back.
