A dominant performance from Arsenal saw them earn a commanding 5-0 win over rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium. New loan signing Chloe Kelly made her second debut for Arsenal, coming off the bench in the second half to enjoy a North London Derby win.
Their latest win came courtesy of goals from Alessia Russo, Mariona Caldentey, Frida Maanum, Emily Fox, and a Clare Hunt own goal. Arsenal are now on 30 points for the season, three behind Manchester United and ten adrift of Women’s Super League leaders Chelsea.
Van Domselaar; McCabe, Catley, Williamson, Fox, Cooney-Cross, Wälti, Maanum, Caldentey, Russo, Foord.
Kop; Neville, Hunt, Bartrip, Nildén, Oroz, Vinberg, Csiki, Raso, Naz, England.
Despite a spritely start from Tottenham, it was an extremely tough afternoon for them, which saw them muster only two shots on target. The Gunners took the lead in the 15h minute via an own goal from Hunt. An untimely slip from Hayley Raso presented Kyra Cooney-Cross the opportunity to whip the ball in. Smart movement from Russo tricked Hunt, who unfortunately for Spurs, deflected the ball into her own net.
Caldentey doubled the lead in the 38th minute, as her initial shot ricocheted off Hunt and back into her pathway. The Spaniard then smashed the ball home into the bottom corner.
The second half followed the pattern of the first with Arsenal dominating both possession and chances. Maanum added the third in the 52nd minute, following a wicked deflection from Hunt, who will not want to remember this afternoon.
Russo got her well-deserved goal minutes later, after an impressive solo run from Caitlin Foord. Tottenham’s best chance of the match fell to Olivia Holdt, who after a perfectly-timed cross from Martha Thomas, headed over the bar. Just when Spurs thought the afternoon could not get any worse, Fox powered in a wonder goal from more than 20 yards out — her first ever WSL goal.
It was a North London derby which saw Chloe Kelly make her second debut for Arsenal, after 2,815 days since her first spell in red and white. It was almost a dream debut for the Lioness, who hit the crossbar with the last kick of the game.
Following the conclusion of the international break, Arsenal will be back in action with another all-London clash against West Ham on March 2nd. Tottenham however, will host Manchester City, as they aim to climb up the WSL table and beat last season’s sixth place finish.
