Ruben Amorim is learning the hard way that he may have just taken one of football’s most impossible jobs: restoring Manchester United to their glories of days gone by.
The 20-time champions of English football now sit 14th-placed in the table after sustaining their fifth defeat of Amorim’s month-long tenure, having just spent Christmas Day in the bottom half of the division for the first time in Premier League history.
United conceded a second Olimpico goal in seven days, the first coming courtesy of Son Heung-min in last week’s seven-goal thriller Carabao Cup quarter-final and tonight’s through Wolves talisman Matheus Cunha to break the deadlock in the 58th minute.
Only 11 minutes prior had Amorim watched his skipper, Bruno Fernandes, depart down the tunnel following a second red card being brandished at the Portuguese midfielder.

According to Manchester Evening News journalist Steven Railston, Amorim ‘blanked’ Fernandes as he made his way off the pitch and was evidently ‘not happy’ with the 30-year-old, who should’ve perhaps known better than to lunge in carelessly when already on a booking.
He will now watch on from home when the Reds welcome Newcastle United to Old Trafford on Monday evening, as will Manuel Ugarte, who also has to serve a one-game suspension after receiving his fifth yellow card.
“It’s so tough to win games in this league with 11 men. With 10 men, it’s more difficult. We have to focus on that,” Amorim told reporters post-match.
It’s the third time this season that Fernandes, rated a mere 5.6/10 by Sofascore tonight, has seen red; he previously did so against FC Porto in the Europa League and at home to Tottenham Hotspur in September, albeit the latter was subsequently rescinded.
Fans can presumably expect a partnership of Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro in holding midfield next time out, with Christian Eriksen likely returning to the starting XI.
