Max Dean was certainly in a good mood on Sunday evening. The 20-year-old English striker helped himself to his third and fourth goals of the Pro League season as Gent demolished Standard Liege 5-0. Since joining the Buffaloes in the summer from MK Dons, the striker has scored nine goals in 20 games. Three of these have come in European competition. His second goal against Standard Liege was a wonderful strike.
Speaking to Het Nieuwsblad after the game, Dean gave an insight into how he approaches the game. The striker said ‘I try to do that as much as possible. If necessary, I tackle with two knees. Why not? You have to give everything for the team. That has been in me since I was young’.
Last season dean scored 19 goals in 34 games for MK Dons in League Two and other competitions. It is quite a leap from the fourth tier of English football to the Belgian Pro League, but Dean clearly has the mentality that gives fans and coaches confidence that he is unlikely to be daunted by the challenge. Gent are in need of a striker that can consistently find the net, with Dean the top scoring striker alongside midfielder Omri Gandelman.
The match against Standard was slightly overshadowed by Noah Fadiga collapsing during the first half. Thankfully, the player, who was let go by Brest over a heart defect, was able to walk off the pitch flanked by two members of the coaching staff. Gent have given an update that Fadiga is doing well and is set to undergo further medical testing.
