Ahead of the match against Man U at Old Trafford, I kept reading about the ‘abysmal’ Newcastle United away record.

I saw various stats quoted.

‘Only two Premier League away wins for Newcastle United since mid-September.’

‘Three defeats for Newcastle United and only two wins in their last seven Premier League away games.’

Statistics are funny things, able to be used in very different ways.

Journalists and pundits could easily have said before Newcastle United won at Old Trafford, that Eddie Howe’s side had only lost three away games, in all competitions, in over seven months.

They could have also mentioned the most relevant away results, the most recent ones.

The last four Premier League away matches had seen Newcastle lose at Brentford (who at that point had easily the best home form in the PL), but hammered Forest 3-1 and Ipswich 4-0 (Ipswich who have just defeated Chelsea 2-0), as well as a point at Palace (which would have been another win if not for a late added time equaliser).

Newcastle United have now won three and drawn one of their last five Premier League matches, with recent wins at Forest, Ipswich and Man U.

It is funny how everybody is raving about Nottingham Forest doing so well, up there in second place, yet I never hear mention that they have already lost twice at home to Newcastle, in league and cup.

Now that 2024 has ended, we can look back at the 25 away matches in that calendar year, so how does the Newcastle United away record actually look over an entire 12 months?

The idea that the Newcastle United away record has been abysmal, not exactly backed up by the reality. Even the last 12 NUFC away matches, we have seen six wins, three draws and just the three away defeats in over seven months.
