Sheffield Wednesday have endured a high squad turnover across the years - and you may find it hard to believe that certain stars ever turned out in the blue and white quarters of the Steel City.

Danny Rohl elected to undertake upheaval to his squad across the summer window, with Wednesday fans pining for an ascension up the table after the German boss pulled off the great escape to steer them away from a return to League One in the previous season.

Many players have come and gone, and it will be hoped that Rohl - should he stay for the long-term - can simply cherry-pick and fine-tune his squad in future windows. The likes of Ike Ugbo, Anthony Musaba and James Beadle in particular will be looking to etch their names into Owls folklore this year, but what about those who you may have forgotten were ever at the club in the first place?

Scott Carson and James Tavernier are the two most high-profile ex-Wednesday players that you can be forgiven for forgetting about, although there are many more - and Football League World has decided to take a look at some of them...

Veteran shot-stopper Carson, then at Liverpool, spent time on loan at Hillsborough in the Championship all the way back in the 2005/06 campaign, but he only made nine appearances, so his spell with the club is indeed largely forgettable.

Carson ended up earning his stripes on loan at Charlton Athletic in the Premier League the following season before forcing his way into the England reckoning, and he has certainly gone on to enjoy a successful career despite being a rather forgettable figure in Wednesday circles.

The four-cap ex-England international has made many appearances across the Premier League and the Championship, and some would attest that he is now living the dream at Manchester City.

Third-in-command behind Ederson and Stefan Ortega, Carson has been with Pep Guardiola's all-conquering City side since 2019. Likely brought in for experience and helping to fulfil the club's homegrown quota, he has only played twice but has been part of a team which has won four consecutive Premier League titles and the treble two years ago, spending his time among some of the greats of the game.

Tavernier, meanwhile, turned out in Wednesday colours more recently than Carson, but that does not mean his brief stint was any more memorable.

The attack-minded right-back was also brought in on loan from the Premier League but made just eight appearances in the third-tier across 2011/12 before returning to Newcastle United.

The 32-year-old had a nomadic career in the English Football League but has gone on to become a sensation at Rangers following his 2015 switch north of the border, playing over 400 times and scoring a simply astonishing 125 goals from right-back.

Tavernier, who captains the Glasgow outfit, does take penalties and free-kicks - and with great success - but that should not take anything away from how remarkable his record is.

Although it will be argued that the level of football is largely weaker than even the Championship, regularly tallying up double digits for both goals and assists from defence takes some doing - and it makes you wonder whether Wednesday, much like some of Tavernier's other ex-EFL clubs such as Rotherham United, Wigan Athletic and Bristol City, could have got a lot more out of him.

It would be a rather pointless and taxing exercise to list all the forgettable former Owls, so we have instead provided a brief overview of a small selection of high-profile players who have turned out for the side in years gone by but may have slipped your memory.

David McGoldrick is the most eye-catching one due to his subsequent exploits with fierce Steel City rivals Sheffield United. He played just four times for Wednesday on loan in the 2011/12 season but made an impression with Coventry City and Ipswich Town before going on to spend four years at Bramall Lane, scoring on 30 occasions.

You may also have forgotten that both Lewis Baker and Will Keane, who currently ply their trade in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End respectively, were on loan at Wednesday in the 2014/15 term.

They did, however, make a combined total of just 17 second-tier appearances.

Ex-England international Jay Bothroyd found himself in the Owls ranks during 2012/13, once again on loan, but found the back of the net just once in a disappointing spell after previously lighting up the Championship with Cardiff City.
