Improved performance in second half only lands point

Our Red Bulls shared a 1-1 draw with WSG Tirol after considerably improving their performance in the second half.

Match summary

Plenty of fans were still taking to their seats when Alex Schlager was forced to pick the ball out of his net. WSG striker Butler was played in with a perfect pass after our boys lost possession in their own half - and applied a clinical finish from the edge of the box to send us behind in the opening phases.

Our boys' first opportunity came to Yorbe Vertessen, who ran in behind well on the right. Stejskal was well positioned in the visitors' goal and saved with his boot (8'). How dearly Thomas Letsch's side needed that to go in!

WSG responded to our first good opportunity by getting a chance for a second. Müller, a Tirol defender, was played in stylishly and Schlager made an equably fine save to prevent us falling two-down (13').

As the game went on, Mads Bidstrup and Co increasingly grabbed a grip on the game, with Bobby Clark playing Vertessen in well - who just lacked the clinical touch (27'), while Hendry Blank had a go from long range (31').

The visitors were put under some real pressure again as Adam Daghim charged past an opponent on the left, but Stejskal got to the ball first before our attacker (34'). The final moment to note in a first-half largely devoid of highlights was a Nicolas Capaldo shot hit well over (45+1').

Our Red Bulls came back out onto the pitch with renewed energy - and two changes - as they looked to haul their way back into it. Sometimes football can be so simple - after just a few minutes, Capaldo played a superb pass into the path of Vertessen, who raced past his marker into the box and pulled the ball across to Moussa Yeo to net in spectacularly for 1-1 (53').

In contrast to the first half, our Red Bulls were able to pen WSG right back in their own area as the attacks rolled in. Yeo on the turn (57') and a powerful Daghim effort (68') as well as strikes from Oscar Gloukh from a free-kick and a drilled effort from around the penalty spot (76' and 82') – to name just the most dangerous ones - didn't lead to a deserved winner.

Schlager had virtually nothing to do in the second half, apart from stopping a lone Müller effort.

The final stages saw Gloukh hit a shot too centrally and Vertessen fire wide of Stejskal's target (89' and 90'). The referee had seen enough by this stage, and our opening Austrian Bundesliga home match of the year ended 1-1.

Views

It was déjà-vu from the Klagenfurt match - only in a more extreme form. We made a terrible start, and after conceding, everything was so chaotic. We didn't have the structure or the energy - you got the impression we weren't ready. That was completely different in the second half. Then you can see the statistics that show we had to win the match. The disappointment from the first half is the predominant feeling, as we gave away important points again.

Thomas Letsch

It is very annoying! When you start a match like that, it makes it much more difficult. That shouldn't happen to us. We weren't focused enough, we mishit the ball too often and made simple mistakes. It was a lot better in the second half, but we just have to score.
