Scrolling down our timeline on a sleep Saturday, we noticed a post on Twitter about Marcin Bulka.

The former Chelsea goalkeeper, now at Nice, was called “one of the most complete and stable goalkeeper in Europe this season,” and compared to Emi Martinez.

It was quite the coincidence, as we had also noticed him in goal for Poland last night, playing against Portugal. It seemed like a good moment to check on his progress. And indeed the Twitter big thinkers are right, at least according to the stats.

His team have drawn far too many games this season and are now 6th, but with a couple more goals in their favour they’d be in the Champions League places. Bulka is a huge part of that, and his vocal leadership from the back is impressive for a 25 year old.

WhoScored have him as the third highest rated goalkeeper in Europe’s top 5 leagues among stoppers with more than 5 starts in the league. His rating of 7.13 puts him only behind Peter Gulacsi and David de Gea as the best glovesmen in Europe.

Chelsea links to former player set to continue

When Chelsea let Bulka go on a free transfer back in 2019 there wasn’t much clamour, despite him being highly rated. But after a bit of time with PSG he’s found his feet, and it was no surprise to see transfer links connecting him with a return to Stamford Bridge this summer.

If he keeps playing like this, we expect those links to only continue. Transfermarkt list him as valued at just €20m, and even at significantly more than that he sounds like good value to us. If Robert Sanchez continues to struggle, expect to hear more and more about this rumour in January and next summer.
