Inter take on Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena today in what is the first leg of a potentially epic Champions League quarterfinal. Inter would perhaps be slight favourites given that they have been a strong, stable unit under Simone Inzaghi for quite some time now but Bayern have enough firepower to do some damage of their own, with the likes of Harry Kane and Michael Olise.
Inter’s recent record against the record German champions is not great. The two sides last met in the Champions League in the group stage of the 2022/23 edition, where Bayern won 2-0 both home and away. Funnily enough, Inter would go on to reach the final of the same edition of the competition.
Inzaghi’s side have a mixed recent track record when it comes to German sides. In the league stage of the Champions League this season, they faced Bundesliga holders Bayer Leverkusen, and lost 1-0 in Germany thanks to a 90th minute winner from Nordi Mukiele. More concerningly though, Xabi Alonso’s side had been much better in the game and deserved the win. However they won 2-1 against the same opposition in the quarterfinals of the 2019/20, which was a one-legged affair held in Dusseldorf, Germany.
Inter also faced German side RB Leipzig in the Champions League this season at home, winning 1-0 due to a Castello Lukeba own goal. Other than that they faced Borussia Dortmund back in 2019 in the Champions League group stages. There again, they won the home leg comfortably but came up short in Germany, losing 3-2.
All in all, Inter’s record against German sides, in particular in Germany is not the greatest. That being said, they will still go into the tie and today’s game as favourites. A classic awaits.
