Amanda Nilden spoke about the importance of claiming three points after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Leicester City at Brisbane Road.

The Sweden international was at the heart of our early opener as she linked up with Maite Oroz before sending a low ball into the box, forcing the Foxes’ goalkeeper to turn the ball into her own net after taking a slight deflection off the defender.

It was the perfect start to our first game in nearly five weeks but, as the game progressed, the lack of minutes was evident, and we had to dig deep to keep the visitors at bay as they pushed for an equaliser late on.

Although the defender admitted it might not have been the best performance on our return to action, the main thing was picking up another three points in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

“I mean, you need a bit luck sometimes,” she said, reflecting on the goal. “But I just tried to put the ball in the areas we have talked about and it’s hard to defend the ball when you’re running towards goal.

“This was so important for us... to get the three points. We have not played a game for a long time so, three points in a game like this, it’s not beautiful, but three points is always three points so we’re very happy with that.”

Next up is the Women’s League Cup quarter-final tie against West Ham at Brisbane Road – tickets are still available to buy – and Amanda is looking forward to a competitive few weeks coming up.

“I’m really excited for the rest of this week,” she added. “It’s important we stick together as a team and everyone is involved. We’re training well, recovering well and the focus now turns to Wednesday.”
