Ruben Amorim has offered a possible explanation for why Antony has been excelling in LaLiga following a disastrous spell at Manchester United.

The Brazilian winger was an expensive signing for the Red Devils, joining from Ajax for an astonishing £86m in September 2022.

The 25-year-old hasn’t come close to justifying the transfer fee Man Utd shelled out for his services, registering just five goals and three assists in the Premier League during his first two seasons at Old Trafford.

After making no league starts in the league this term, Antony joined Betis on a six-month loan deal in the winter transfer window.

Since then he has scored two goals and made two assists in four LaLiga appearances, and scored two more in the Uefa Europa Conference League.

It’s a remarkable turnaround in form that no Man Utd fan would have predicted when the move was completed, but Amorim reckons he knows why it’s come about.

In a sit-down interview with Rio Ferdinand for TNT Sports, the Portuguese tactician believes Antony struggled with the physical nature of Premier League football, but is able to thrive in Spain where the game is less robust.

“When you play against any team in England, the physicality is there,” Amorim said. “If you don’t have physicality, you will struggle a lot.

“Antony is so much better now in Spain. It’s [because of] a lot of factors but I guarantee you it’s physicality.”
