The terms of Andy Carroll’s (36) contract at Girondins de Bordeaux have been of significant interest this season. The Englishman made the choice to go down into the fourth tier to join Bordeaux, who went bankrupt last summer and were forced to revoke their professional status. As a result were kicked out of Ligue 2, despite securing safety last season.

However, that did not dissuade the former Liverpool, Newcastle United, and West Ham United forward from making the switch from Ligue 2 side SC Amiens. In an interview with RMC Sport back in October, Carroll revealed that it was costing him money to play for Bordeaux.

“I won’t tell you the exact figure but to give you an idea, since I moved here, I rent a pretty little house and my salary is less than my rent. If I joined Bordeaux, it clearly wasn’t for the money. I had offers from elsewhere to play in Saudi Arabia, but that didn’t interest me,” said the former England international.

His wage was initially estimated at around €3,500 and then, in light of his comments, estimated at around €2,500. However, his true wage is even lower, as now revealed by L’Équipe. As part of an investigation to Bordeaux’s finances, it was discovered that the centre-forward is earning just €1,614 gross per month, so just €1,400 net. The minimum wage for a regular full-time job in France is €1,801,80 gross, meaning that Carroll is employed as a part-time worker.
