The former Red Devils forward selected the club’s ‘Holy Trinity’ of Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best, each of whom were crucial in the club’s first-ever European Cup success in 1968.

Incredibly the three were all named winner of the Ballon d’Or with Law (1964), Charlton (1966) and Best (1968) each claiming football’s most prestigious individual honour.

Cole’s final selection was former teammate Roy Keane. The Irishman is the club’s most successful ever captain and led the side to their historic 1998/99 treble-winning season.

“I mean for me, personally, the first three are simple. There’s a trilogy at Manchester United for a reason,” Cole explained to the club’s official social media channels.

“That’s why they’ve got the statue there. Sir Bobby (Charlton), Denis (Law) and George Best. I think those three players that I mentioned there epitomise what Manchester United are as a football club and having special players, you know, and what special players do for Manchester United. So, there’s three there.

The last one might be a little bit difficult because there’s been so many unbelievable players. Tough one for me but I’d put Roy (Keane) in there. I had an opportunity to play with him, fantastic player, great leader, inspirational off the pitch. His leadership skills were phenomenal.”
