Newcastle United are weighing up an appeal of Anthony Gordon's red card from Sunday's defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion which, as it stands, sees him suspended for the Carabao Cup final.

Gordon was given his marching orders 83 minutes into the eventual defeat after pushing Brighton's Jean Paul van Hecke in the face, with a straight red card for violent conduct leading to a three-match ban.

If the suspension is enforced, Gordon will miss Premier League games against West Ham United and Brentford, either side of the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on 16 March.

"If we analyse the incident and feel there's grounds for [an appeal], we will do without hesitation," manager Eddie Howe said after the game.

Newcastle could hope to see Gordon's red card rescinded or the punishment reduced. A one-game ban would leave him free to face Liverpool at Wembley Stadium, but they would need to convince the Football Association that referee Anthony Taylor made a mistake with his assessment of the incident.

Howe insisted he had not seen a full replay of the incident when questioned after the game, but defended Liverpool-born Gordon in the face of frustration from fans.

"I'd need to see it, I can't sit here and give an honest opinion to that until I've done the work that you've done and looked at it," he began. "But, knowing the player, I know there's no malice intended there.

"He plays hard - I want him to play hard, I want him to be competitive, but I don't see an issue there at this moment. I think it would be very out of context with how he is generally, maybe a bit of frustration in the game that things weren't going our way, but I'd say that's not a common sight for me when Anthony plays."
