So far Manchester City have had a successful January transfer window. The signings of Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov have strengthened Pep Guardiola’s squad. Marmoush helps City now by bolstering Manchester City’s attack. Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov do appear to be signings for the future, although they can contribute now at centre-back. Manchester City’s defensive stocks have been decimated by injury this season so their signings address an immediate need in Pep Guardiola’s squad. But two more positions appear in need of strengthening in the Manchester City squad.
There is no doubt that if Manchester City could do with signing both a midfielder and a full-back before the transfer window closes. If they coue it would nearly make it the ideal transfer window for the Premier League champions. With Kyle Walker having left the club and Rodri suffering a serious knee injury in September those holes in Pep Guardiola’s squad are clear to see. Pep Guardiola has used band-aid solutions to cover the holes in his squad.
Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva have filled the void left by Rodri’s injury. But neither of those three players typically plays the position that Rodri does. Matheus Nunes has stepped in as a right-back this season. You can’t fault his effort, but his over-eagerness has cost City on several occasions. If they can land another midfielder and a full-back it would solve the biggest holes in City’s squad. Based on two new reports it appears that Manchester City are trying to do just that.
Fabrizio Romano has reported via X that Manchester City are continuing negotiations with FC Porto over the potential signing of midfielder Nico Gonzàlez. Furthermore, Romano adds that personal terms between Manchester City and Nico Gonzàlez won’t be an issue. Lastly, Romano reports that City are hoping to negotiate a transfer fee with FC Porto of over €40 million rather than pay his €60 million release clause.
Reporter Rudy Galetti has also reported via X that Manchester City are continuing to negotiate with Juventus over the potential signing of Andrea Cambiaso. Furthermore, Galetti adds that Pep Guardiola sees the Italian international as a potential Kyle Walker replacement.
It does appear that Manchester City are moving to fill the two biggest holes in their squad. If they could sign both of Nico Gonzàlez and Andrea Cambiaso it would cap off almost the perfect transfer window for the world champions. The aim for City was to significantly improve Pep Guardiola’s squad during the January transfer window. Although both deals aren’t complete, if they can sign Gonzàlez and Cambiaso, there wouldn’t appear to be any more holes in the Manchester City squad. Cambiaso would immediately improve City’s full-back options. His versatility and talent would complement what City already have. Nico Gonzàlez could be a shrewd addition to Manchester City’s midfield. With how he plays he’d immediately add what City’s midfield lacks.
It does appear that Manchester City are still aiming to complete two more signings before the transfer window closes. If they could sign Gonzàlez and Cambiaso they would have accomplished what they set out to achieve in the January transfer window. We now wait to see if City’s pursuit of both of Gonzàlez and Cambiaso will be successful.
