Since Frank Lampard was appointed as Coventry City manager a couple of months ago, we’ve been waiting for the first Chelsea loan links to pop up.

He joked in one of his first press conferences there that he would be bringing in Joao Felix, and while that wasn’t serious, there is the very real prospect of him taking on some of our young talents to gain Premier League experience.

The Athletic have today done their transfer deal sheet looking to the week ahead in the market, and they have a taste of the first really believable connection between a Blue and the Sky Blues. They write that Sam Rak-Sakyi, who has been a star of the youth team and made his first team debut this season, could make the move to Coventry on loan until the end of the season.

“Rak Sakyi, who made his debut for the first team this season, is wanted on loan by Coventry City and has had approached from clubs in Europe,” they write.

“Chelsea are deciding whether it would be better for him to continue his education with them or to go elsewhere.”

A move can only benefit developing Rak-Sakyi

We always like the idea of players going to Europe and learning in diverse different environments, but for a central midfielder looking to step up to the senior game, the Championship should be perfect.

With the cup competitions now heading towards the sharp end, there will be fewer easy minutes for youngsters like Sam, and moving to join club legend Lampard as he gets to grips with a mid-table team in the second tier could be a great learning experience.

After missing last week’s FA Cup game with illness, it seems his first team chances for the season are almost over, and a loan somewhere is the natural next step.
