The draw for the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey took place earlier this week and it threw two enticing ties as Real Madrid will take on Real Sociedad while Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will face each other.
It will be a two-legged affair, with the first leg set to be played in the last week of February and the reverse fixture in the first week of April.
Real Madrid managed to avoid Barça and Atletico in the semi-finals but will face a stern test against Real Sociedad. Should they eke through, one of their arch-rivals will await in the final.
Speaking to the media at the presentation of the MadCup, a youth football tournament, Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo claimed that a final between the two Spanish capital clubs would be exciting. However, he remained respectful of their semi-final opponents, Barcelona.
“A Madrid derby final would be magnificent, but first, we must get past Barcelona. We have to play them first. They are a fantastic team, and it will be very difficult to eliminate them, but we will be there,” he stated.

Cerezo acknowledged the strength of Barcelona under Hansi Flick, predicting a highly competitive semi-final.
“Barcelona have always been and continue to be a great team. It will be a fantastic tie, and I believe that whoever wins it could go on to be the champion,” he added.
The Atletico Madrid president was also asked about the controversy surrounding the refereeing in La Liga and the complaints from Real Madrid, but refrained from commenting on it.
Cerezo also steered clear of any discussion regarding refereeing decisions.
“We are here to present a magnificent and wonderful event for young players – boys and girls alike. Today, we are here to talk about this tournament, not about referees, leagues, or federations,” he concluded.
