The Copa del Rey will be won tonight in the latest edition of El Clásico, as fierce rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid face off in the competition’s final in Seville for the first time since 2014. Madrid have been handed a significant boost ahead of kick-off, as Kylian Mbappe is expected to come back into the fold having recovered from a minor injury.

The pre-match narrative has focused more on referees than players. Real Madrid released a statement yesterday saying that they intended to boycott all media obligations ahead of the tie due to the assigned referee, Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, whom they insinuated harboured a bias against them and favoured Barcelona.

Bengoetxea maintained in a news conference that he was an ‘honourable’ person as he broke down in tears and accused Madrid’s TV channel of putting pressure on officials, though Real described his statement as ‘unacceptable’.
