Mathys Tel was amidst a tug of war between several clubs during the winter transfer window. The French forward had initially decided to stay at Bayern Munich, but lack of playing time in January forced him to consider his options. Tottenham Hotspur eventually agreed to a loan deal with the Bavarian club on the deadline day.
Tel will play in North London during the next few months. The French forward was also attracting interest from Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea. Meanwhile, a host of other European clubs were also ready to sign him on loan.
Spurs managed to pay the expensive loan fee for Tel and got an option to buy him for €55 million. Staying at Spurs in the long run is not certainty for the French forward even if the Premier League club have the option to buy.
Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane believes Spurs will be a perfect move for Tel. The former Spurs striker told media (via iMiaSanMia) that Tel will improve by playing for Spurs during the second half of the season. Kane also insisted that Spurs fans will feel Tel welcomed in North London as the Premier League pushes for cup glory during the second half of the season.
"It's a great move for both parties. Mathys is a great guy and very hardworking. It's important for him to get regular game time and keep improving to fulfill his potential. It's great for Tottenham to have a young hungry player with loads of talent."Harry Kane on Tel's move to Spurs
It was rather surprising to see Bayern open to listening to permanent offers for Tel in January. He is one of the highly rated forwards in Europe. Moreover, the French forward has done well for Die Roten whenever he got consistent game time.
The Bavarian faithful will be relieved to see Tel leaving on a temporary basis. A good loan spell at Spurs can kickstart Tel’s career in Munich. With the uncertainty around the future of several senior wingers at Bayern, Tel certainly has the opportunity to succeed in Munich starting next season.
The record Bundesliga champions decided against signing a new forward to replace Tel in the squad. They have recalled Gabriel Vidovic from his loan spell at Mainz to replace the French forward. Vidovic has started training with the first team at Sabner Strasse.
The Croatian playmaker has endured a difficult end to 2024 as he suffered a serious knee injury in November. Vidovic has recovered from this injury and will consistently make the matchday squad at Bayern during the second half of the campaign.
Bayern are expected to overhaul their attack in the summer. Leroy Sane, Kingsley Coman, and Serge Gnabry could leave Munich. The Bavarian club wants to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, while Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund also features on the list of transfer targets for the summer.
