On Friday evening, Bayern Munich hosted mid-table side Werder Bremen for matchday 21 of the ongoing Bundesliga season. In typical fashion, Bayern dominated possession from the opening whistle. However, despite enjoying 75% ball possession, Bayern’s performance in the opening 45 minutes was more workman-like than enterprising as the first half finished goalless.
In the second half, Die Roten showed marked improvement in both attack and defense. Although it wasn’t a scintillating second-half performance by any means, Bayern managed to go through the gears well enough to wear down the opposition and secure an ultimately comfortable 3-0 victory courtesy of two penalties converted by Harry Kane and a tap-in from Leroy sandwiched in between the spot kicks.
With the reigning Bundesliga Champions - Bayer Leverkusen dropping points in a 0-0 draw at Wolfsburg on Saturday, and courtesy of Friday’s win, Bayern now hold an eight-point lead at the top of the table,. As things currently stand, with 13 matchdays remaining in the domestic season, it would take an extraordinary meltdown for the Bavarian side not to bring the Bundesliga title back to Munich in June. Apart from the eight-point lead, Die Roten also has a goal difference of +22. Let us take a look at some of the major takeaways from Die Roten’s 3-0 victory over Werder Bremen.
