In a recent interview with WhoScored, former Manchester United and Netherlands goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, the Dutchman shared his thoughts on Liverpool’s Champions League prospects as well as touching upon his preferences for his ideal backline.
When asked about which current centre-backs he would prefer in front of him, Van der Sar did not hesitate to mention our formidable skipper Virgil van Dijk stating “I think Virgil could be nice because of his presence and his quality as a leader, and I would also need an Italian one.”
Virgil’s dominance in aerial duels, composure on the ball, and ability to marshal a defence, make him a natural choice for any goalkeeper and his Italian reference reflects his appreciation for defensive discipline and tactical awareness.

Regarding his prediction for the Champions League winner this season, the former Red Devil surprisingly backed Liverpool!
“Liverpool, but it was difficult to say that. There are a lot of Dutch people there, the manager is doing well and they have fantastic fans.”
Now, there is no better feeling than immersing yourself on a European night under the L4 lights, and with the Champions League competition heating up, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool can live up to Van de Sar’s expectations.
