Birmingham City sealed promotion back to the Championship at the first attempt with six games remaining courtesy of a 2-1 victory at Peterborough.

Peterborough's Kwame Poku temporarily halted the celebrations by equalising just three minutes after Alfie May had given the visitors the lead in the 20th minute.

However, Taylor Gardner-Hickman restored Birmingham’s advantage eight minutes before half-time, with a goal that ultimately proved to be the matchwinner.

Big-spending City, who were relegated last season, now sit 14 points ahead of second-placed Wrexham and cannot be overtaken by third-placed Wycombe, despite the Chairboys' victory at Huddersfield.

Poku then levelled for Posh with a powerful strike from the edge of the penalty area after Birmingham only partially cleared a corner.

But it was Gardner-Hickman who ensured the win and promotion, calmly finishing past goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic from the left side of the box after receiving a pass from Marc Leonard.
