Sheffield United have been linked with a move to sign Norwich City star Borja Sainz
Sheffield United are eyeing a summer move for Norwich City attacker Borja Sainz.
According to Alan Nixon, the Spaniard is being targeted by the Blades going into the upcoming transfer market.
Sainz has earned a lot of plaudits for his performances in the Championship this year, with the winger leading the way at the top of the goal-scoring charts.
The 24-year-old has scored 17 times for Johannes Hoff Thorup’s side, with the team chasing a play-off place.
It's not yet clear just how much it could take for Sainz to be prized away, though the Spaniard is only under contract until next summer.
Here, we look at how much Sainz’s wages cost amid this potential summer move to Sheffield United, using estimated figures from Capology.
Norwich have a total weekly payroll worth £378,000, with that amounting to an average wage of £14,000 per player.
Sainz is earning slightly above average in the Canaries’ first team, with the forward on a contract worth £15,000 per week.
Sainz has cemented himself as a key figure at Carrow Road with his performances this season, standing out alongside Josh Sargent as their key attacking threats.
However, the American is Norwich’s third best-paid player, receiving a wage of £25,000-a-week.
Only Jack Stacey and Shane Duffy are earning more for the Norfolk outfit, with the pair both on a salary of £35,000 per week.
Sainz is on a contract with Norwich until the summer of 2026, having agreed to a three-year deal when he joined from Giresunspor.
Given the expiry date is quickly coming upon us, Norwich will have a big decision to make over Sainz’s future this summer.
Failure to gain promotion will put pressure on the club to be open to offers from top flight clubs like, potentially, Sheffield United.
The Blades are top of the Championship, and will be looking to compete in the Premier League next year.
The Yorkshire outfit will also look to improve on Sainz’s current £15,000-a-week salary if they’re in the top flight, with new owners ready to invest in the team this year.
Sainz, however, may feel he is deserving of a higher pay packet at Norwich, given just how influential he has been under Throup.
Sheffield United’s estimated wage bill amounts to £558,000 per week in total, with an average salary of £18,600.
Rhian Brewster is the team’s top earner at the moment, with the forward receiving £35,000-a-week, the same as Duffy and Stacey.
Key figure Gustavo Hamer is on a wage worth £30,000 per week, which is the kind of deal that Sainz would be looking for should he move to Bramall Lane, especially if the club are competing in the Premier League.
Other key forwards like Tom Cannon and Kieffer Moore are earning £25,000 per week each as well.
If Sheffield United are promoted, some of these players may also receive pay increases as a reward for their achievement, likely through new contracts.
Cannon’s £25,000 per week salary could be indicative of the kind of deal a new arrival could receive, with the striker signing in January under the new owners.
Sheffield United should certainly have the funds to sign Sainz and agree an increase in his current Norwich pay if promoted, but that is only if the Canaries are willing to let him go this summer.
