As reported by Sky Germany, an Opta Computer has given Borussia Dortmund a 5.1% chance of qualifying for the Champions League next year by finishing 4th.
The computer calculates the probabilities for the scenario, considering all of the games remaining in the Bundesliga this season. The probability reads grim for BVB fans, but it will come as no surprise.
Dortmund currently sit in 11th place on 29 points and 7 points adrift from RB Leipzig in 4th. Having just lost to 5th-place Stuttgart in Niko Kovač’s opening game as BVB head coach, the mission may very well be impossible.
At the beginning of the season, Dortmund were given a 78.4% chance of finishing in the top four – this was later reduced to 20.9% before the second half of the season started.
In addition to the sporting blow this would have for Dortmund, financially, it could be crippling.
The Westphalia team alone took over €100m from the Champions League last season. If they fail to reach the top four, they will make a fraction of it. What’s more, if they don’t qualify for any European competition, the sum will be even lower.
Dortmund will likely then see the vultures circling over Signal Iduna Park as their best players edge ever closer to the exit door. This has already been reported by GGFN with the likes of Jamie Gittens being linked with a move to the Premier League.
