Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has responded to Ruben Amorim’s claim that this current crop of United players could be considered ‘the worst in the club’s history.’

Fernandes scored a dramatic injury-time winner against Rangers on Thursday in the Europa League, which provided a much-needed distraction from their dreadful league form.

Last Sunday’s defeat to Brighton saw Amorim publicly humiliate his players in his post-match press conference but Fernandes believes it was a moment of ‘rage’ from the United head coach.

“Obviously I don’t want my manager saying certain things about the team because I know he doesn’t feel that,” he said ahead of today’s clash against Fulham.

“I’m pretty sure that it was a moment of rage. I’m Portuguese, I know that the blood comes out pretty quick, it was that moment.

“I was here with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer], one of the calmest people I’ve ever met, and he had this rage at the players sometimes.

“When you’re in a position as a manager you want to win games, you know that you depend on the results and sometimes you need to have these kinds of words for your players.

“It wasn’t anything out of context or something that we didn’t deserve to hear but he made himself part of that. When a manager makes himself a part of what he’s saying, no-one can get angry or disappointed by that.

United are currently languishing 13th in the Premier League table, seven points adrift of today’s opponents Fulham and a further 12 behind fifth-placed Manchester City.

There is the suggestion that Amorim’s brutal comments where said to try shock his players into producing better performances on the pitch.

“I think when he said ‘worst team in Manchester [United’s history], he’s speaking about the position we are [in the league table],” Fernandes added.

“You look at us in the league and we are probably in the worst position that United have ever been. I think there was only time where United were worse than this.

“You have to take that. It’s the reality, unfortunately, for us that we are in a position where this club for a long, long time doesn’t belong there.

“We have to accept that and understand that we need to push ourselves to much better things and much higher positions because the reality is, to play for this club, you have to have the pressure. You have to have the balls to play for this club because it is where it is.

“You have to feel that in every moment, in every game there’s a new chance to bring the club back to the position it deserves.

“Unfortunately for us, this season there has been too many ups and downs. Every time we looked like we were getting there, we get punched again and we go down.

“What we have to do is every time we get a punch, we have to get up and try to punch back.”
