Bruno Guimaraes says winning the Carabao Cup is ‘one of the best days of my life’ after Newcastle United ended their 70-year domestic trophy drought with a 2-1 win over Liverpool.
Goals in each half from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak were enough to defeat Premier League leaders Liverpool, who were outperformed by Eddie Howe’s men from start to finish.
Federico Chiesa scored a late consolation deep into second half stoppage time for Arne Slot’s men, but it was not enough to deny Eddie Howe’s side their first piece of silverware since 1955.
Guimaraes, who joined Newcastle in January 2022, was visibly emotional during his post-match interview with Sky Sports, and said this cup win is for the Geordie faithful in what is also his first trophy in European football.
“It’s all for these fans,” Guimaraes said. “They deserve everything. When I first came here I said I wanted to put my name in history.
“We can now say we are the champions again. This is one of the best days of my life.
“I don’t have any words. It’s the best day of my life. For them [the fans] it’s like the World Cup. People have grown up and not seen us as champions. My first year as captain of this club and it’s one of the best days. This is unbelievable.
“This is my second home. We are making history. Some day when I leave this club I want the fans to sing my name the way they do to Shearer. He text me before the game. I’m so emotional today.”
Newcastle are still in with a chance of qualifying for Europe next season via their Premier League position, but their cup success means they will be playing in the Conference League if they were to miss out.
Eddie Howe becomes the first English manager to either the FA Cup or League Cup since Harry Redknapp in 2008 when he won the FA Cup with Portsmouth.
